About the Artist

Since 1976, artist Winthrop Handy has specialized in the humorous portraiture of dogs and cats.  He is well-known for his "Big Shots" of large groups of dogs in a single photograph.  His love of animals, patience and artistic skills combine to create unique images for animal lovers and collectors.

After graduating from UMass Dartmouth, Winthrop started his career as a newspaper cartoonist in 1970.  This pathway lead him to photo journalism, which later evolved into portraiture.  His work is done using a combination of natural North light, studio strobe light and IRIS Giclée printing technology.

Winthrop and his wife, Anne, are passionate sponsors of NEADS/Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans, located in Princeton, Massachusetts.

In 2001, he received the International Eastman Kodak Innovators award.  The photograph which won this award for Winthrop Handy is "Ebony and Ivory", a photograph of two pugs.

In 2003, Winthrop Handy's work was featured in the Springfield Fine Art Museum Exhibit in Massachusetts.  The show was titled "Reigning Cats and Dogs".
